The Zero Waste Network Sydney was launched on 22 November to a room full of passionate ‘wasties’ – professionals who work in the waste and resource recovery sector. The well-attended event was emceed by James O’Loghlin, ABC television and radio presenter, and held at the Blacksmith’s Workshop in Australia Technology Park.

Nov 2017 Snip20171102_3 Return and Earn – The NSW Container Deposit Scheme 

The NSW Container Deposit Scheme will start on 1 December 2017 under the branding “return and earn”. Residents will be able to return eligible drinks containers at reverse vending machines (RVMs) or manual collection points.WARR Regional Strategic Coordinator, Hazel Storey has been on the NSW Government’s Working Group advocating for the needs of Local Councils in the scheme.

Oct 2017  171026_TTIP meeting 3 Dockless Bike Share – SSROC to Engage with Operators
In recent months and weeks, several local and international operators of Dockless Bike Share are already operating or proposing to operate in the SSROC region. The SSROC Secretariat and the Traffic/Transport Infrastructure and Planning Working Group are exploring the options for an SSROC regional approach.Read more here…
 Oct 2017  Snip20171102_1  SSROC participates in shaping Greater Sydney Region and District Plans
Towards the end of October 2017, the Greater Sydney Commission released the revised draft Greater Sydney Region Plan, Eastern City and the South District Plans. This followed submissions on the initial draft plans by SSROC, councils and other stakeholders.Read more here…

Launch of the Veolia Woodlawn MBT Facility

On Friday, 8 September, the result of close to 10 years of work for SSROC and six member councils was realised with the official opening of the Veolia MBT waste treatment facility in Woodlawn, 40 minutes south of Goulburn.

The launch of Our Energy Future at 107 Projects in Redfern on 21 June 2017 was a wonderful success. Professor Lesley Hughes from the Climate Council was the guest speaker, followed by Moreland Energy Foundation’s CEO Alison Rowe, with SSROC General Manager Namoi Dougall formally launching the Program on behalf of SSROC President Cr Sally Betts.For photos and to read more click here…

Liveability in Sydney’s Central and South Districts
The SSROC Liveability Indicators and Mapping project was recently completed by SGS Economics and Planning, who worked closely with the eleven SSROC member councils. The project provides an evidence base and builds on the SSROC’s work on Liveability benchmarks for central and southern Sydney report.

Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (WARR) Update
The WARR team at SSROC has been working hard on a number of key projects, including the Waste Less, Recycle More Community Education Project, reducing recycling and waste contamination in Multi Unit Dwellings (MUDs), and much more. read more about it here.
