Welcome to the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC)

The Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) is an association of 11 councils spanning Sydney’s southern suburbs, eastern suburbs, CBD, and inner west and covering a third of the Greater Sydney’s population, or 1.7m people.

SSROC provides a forum through which our member councils can interact, exchange ideas and work collaboratively to solve regional issues and contribute to the future sustainability of the region.

We advocate on behalf of our region to ensure that the major issues are addressed by all levels of government. Our current focus includes the environment, transport, procurement, waste, and planning.

The Region

The 11 councils that make up the SSROC Region are responsible for 1.7 million people, of whom, more than 25% are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The People

Over 1.7 million people live in the 604 sq km that make up the SSROC region.

The region includes the three most densely populated areas in Australia (Australia Year Book 2008). The population of the region is around a third of the population of Sydney and 6% of the population of Australia.

The Infrastructure

The region is host to major employers and contains two of Australia’s most important economic gateways: Sydney Airport and Port Botany.

 It is also the site of infrastructure that plays a major role on a metropolitan, state and country-wide scale, such as: The Sydney central business district, The iconic Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Anzac Bridge, Major regional centres and vital transport corridors, Major universities and hospitals.

The Land

The SSROC region extends from Sydney Harbour south to the Royal National Park, and from the east coast west halfway to Parramatta.

The region is rich with waterways, coastal zones, natural features and heritage items that are protected and enhanced, including: Botany Bay, Royal National Park, Significant wetlands, Cooks, Georges, Hacking and Woronora Rivers, and Sydney Harbour foreshore
