Sustainable procurement

SSROC works with our 12 member councils to ensure that sustainable procurement is a priority in all of our joint procurements.

Sustainable procurement is the process of making purchasing decisions that meet a council’s needs for goods and services in a way that also benefits the local community and society as a whole, while minimising any impact on the environment from the procurement.

SSROC has developed several resources below for our councils to support their sustainable procurement efforts:

• Sustainable Procurement e-learning modules: If you are new to sustainable procurement or would like a refresher, these two 20-minute e-learning modules on sustainable procurement are a great place to start. Designed to be used in staff inductions and training, these are bite size interactive modules to help council staff learn about sustainable procurement considerations.

• Sustainable Procurement Checklist: About to start a new procurement? Refer to the steps on this one-page checklist to help consider sustainability at each step in the procurement process.
• Sustainability Criteria, Clauses and Metrics in Procurement: A useful guide for councils to refer to when developing sustainability specifications and clauses particularly for product categories with high sustainability risks such as construction, facilities management, waste and general categories.
• Case Studies on Sustainable Procurement: Real examples of sustainable procurement in action.
• Resource list on Sustainable Procurement: A list of useful websites and resources for more information.
• Due Diligence: A short guide on understanding what checks and processes are needed to assess suppliers before entering into a contract with them. This document was part of the Sustainable Procurement training SSROC ran for council staff.
• List of labels and certifications: Common eco labels used for different products.
